The Christmas countdown is nearly at an end but, if like us you’ve been too busy to plan up until now, we’re here with some of the best winter event trends of 2017 to help you jazz up your Christmas dinner table…
TOP DRINKS TRENDS
Desserts posing as cocktails are fast becoming the next big thing. The sweeter the better! Try your hand at a sugar cookie martini made with the sweetest vanilla vodka around and plenty of sprinkles.
Gin continues to be the spirit of choice and with Portobello Road’s turkey-flavoured gin you can really drink the spirit of Christmas. For those of you not wanting to push the boat out quite that far, try a winter twist on a classic G & T by adding a splash of creme de mure and garnishing with a few blackberries, or grab a bottle of spiced apple gin and just add tonic.
FAD FOOD TRENDS
Christmas, especially the parties, has always been all about the glitter but this year it’s even on the food. From gold dusted roast turkeys to a shimmering gold Christmas pudding, edible gold leaf and gold dust is easy to get hold of and will add extra pizzazz to anything you’re knocking up in the kitchen this year. Paint onto poached pears or sprinkle over your pavlova and prepare to impress even the trickiest of in-laws.
DECOR AND TABLESCAPE TRENDS
It’s not just Christmas food that has been taken up a notch – the glitz and sparkle of decorations this year has been just as bullish with a big nod towards kitsch. Choose the brightest, sparkliest and wackiest decorations you can find to adorn your Christmas dinner table and you’ll be very in vogue. Pineapples, llamas, seahorses… anything goes. Floral or foodie – just make sure they’re big, bold and have maximum impact.
If you prefer a subtler approach, stick with bronze and rose gold touches. We’re still adoring this modern metallics trend and there’s no sign of it disappearing. Or for the ultimately lazy, stick with this year’s ‘naked greenery’ trend – just add a few fairy lights or candles to an eucalyptus wreath or some pine fronds and you’re good to go!
FREE FROM FOOD TREND
Making sure there’s food to suit everyone is crucial at your Christmas party, especially if the alcohol will be flowing freely. Catering for all types of different diets can be overwhelming but this year there are so many deliciously tempting vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options, even the flexitarians may choose to go meat free on Christmas Day. Just don’t forget to make the gravy vegan too!
Why not follow the centrepiece trend but make it a giant stuffed pumpkin rather than your roast turkey? Stuff with wild rice, brussels sprouts and cranberries or whatever is your favourite Christmas veg. Or make a beautiful veggie pie and decorate with stars or holly and berry pastry cutouts just as you would with a Christmas cake – you can even make the pastry gluten-free.
